This week's we'll be focussing on the highly technical Japanese sportswear brand: Descente. After initially being started by Ishimoto Shoten in 1935, they were able to capitalize on the growing popularity of baseball in Japan and found great success producing cream colored baseball uniforms and pants. Around 1954 Japan's first professional skier, Kazuyoshi Nishimura, was brought on as an advisor to the company. The brand actually gave Nishimura quite a bit of creative freedom and started to go through the process of trial and error to figure out which of his ideas were viable. Eventually Descente found that focussing on skiwear would be their best bet for maximizing market share as they already had Japan's most prolific skier (at the time) as a brand advisor and ambassador. Nishimura was a stickler for perfection when it came to his ski wear and as such has shaped the brand's history and reputation for manufacturing products that incorporate extreme attention to detail as well as a design that works in tandem with the human body to ensure the best performance possible.
Descente has a multi-step design/manufacturing process that includes: a 3D simulation process known as "Motion 3D", sewing technicians that have national skill qualifications, and self imposed design criteria that meet even the highest standards of the global sportswear marketplace. "Motion 3D" is a process that simulates each garment as though it were made of paper as opposed to a soft fabric. This allows the designer to get an exact feel for even the smallest of details. Another result of this design process is that the jacket is then significantly more comfortable when worn actively. In addition all of Descente's sewing technicians have certifications that prove they were able to not only pass difficult practical skill examinations, but have also demonstrated a strong theoretical appreciation of technical sewing. As such all of Descente's technicians do very intricate and time consuming sewing to ensure the highest quality product possible.
A key element of Descente's global product strategy is to produce products that meet the needs of potential customers everywhere. Descente is a brand for perfectionists that want the highest quality performance garments on the market. They hold themselves to the highest design and quality standards possible and even go so far as to share a list of "Things not to do" throughout the whole company. Descente also does rigorous internal evaluations so as to be sure that all testing procedures and standards are constantly maintained.
